About IOOS

Data Overview

PacIOOS supports a variety of data servers to provide easy and interoperable access to our data holdings. Each of these Open Source utilities features a different set of capabilities as outlined below.

Here is a brief explanation of some of the data-related categories and terminology used on this page:

Data types: The term "grids" or "gridded data" represent data with spatial components in both the latitude and longitude dimensions, also known as raster data. These include forecast models, satellite data, and other data sets from which map imagery may be produced. In contrast, "point" data represent measurements at a fixed location in space such as from moored ocean buoys and coastal stations, also known as in situ data.

Output formats: the list of available formats for downloading data or derived images (maps or plots). Some options may only pertain to either gridded or point-based data.

Metadata: Documentation pertaining to a data set, or metadata, can be encapsulated in a variety of standard formats.

Viewers: Many data servers also provide mechanisms for inspecting or browsing a data set's contents by providing tools for producing customizable maps and plots (time series, depth profiles, transects, scatter plots, etc.).

Services: Data services are standardized, community-based protocols for accessing and subsetting data or derived products (e.g. imagery) over HTTP. Many software applications and programming languages can directly import data utilizing these services (e.g. MATLAB, ArcGIS, IDL, R, GrADS, Google Earth, QGIS, etc.). Two communities that have helped shape these services include Unidata and the Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC).
