Tracking surface particles from the Ala Wai

This page shows an animation of particles tracked from the Ala Wai outflow area. The animation is generated each day and is based on the Regional Ocean Model System (ROMS) for the S. Shore of Oahu. Particles are "released" every 15 minutes for a 24 hour period. The color of the particle indicates its release time (purple-blue first, then green-yellow, finally orange-red). The particles are tracked for a total of 48 hours, i.e., a two day model forecast is used. The results are intended to provide a visual estimate of Ala Wai outflow and are extremely experimental. For more information about the model, contact Prof. Brian Powell; Dr. Ivica Janekovic provides the two-day forecast and trajectory code. For information about the animations or to request similar animations for other regions, contact Jim Potemra.
