Ocean and Coastal Projects
Purpose
As part of the US Integrated Ocean Observing System (IOOS), PacIOOS is charged with making ocean and coastal data available in the Pacific Islands by serving as the “regional information coordination entity” for ocean and coastal data in the region. In order to meet this responsibility, PacIOOS has dedicated this section of the website to serve as a repository of ocean and coastal program and project data collected by researchers, NGOs, community groups, and partners throughout the Pacific.
Benefits
In addition to advancing regional ocean knowledge through open information exchange, the PacIOOS Project Data Repository offers a number of benefits to project managers and principal investigators of ocean and coastal projects in the Pacific. This service may be used to help meet a critical piece of the federal grant requirement relating to a life-cycle data management plan, thereby eliminating the need to hire a web developer to develop a new web page to host project data. Indeed, PacIOOS has the capacity to store vast quantities of data in long-term archives at minimal cost. Furthermore, data housed within PacIOOS may be integrated into PacIOOS data viewers, allowing users to overlay project data with other data sets.
The potential benefits of housing ocean and coastal project data with the PacIOOS Project Data Repository include the following:
- Meet a critical piece of the federal grant requirement relating to a life-cycle data management plan;
- Storage of large data sets in long-term archives;
- Easy access to view and/or download project data by a wide user audience;
- Highlight various aspects of the project (see Ideas for Project Page Tabs below);
- Render data searchable (coming soon);
- Potential for direct link to data sets via the PacIOOS Voyager; and
- Potential to visualize project data with other data sets in PacIOOS Voyager.
The Basics
- Project manager sends PacIOOS the following:
- Project data in a form that we can ingest*;
- Desired tabs for the project page; and
- All supplemental information to be displayed in an electronic format.
- PacIOOS will:
- Create a new Project Page for the project with tabs chosen by project manager;
- Store data on PacIOOS servers;
- Ingest and display data into appropriate data viewer(s); and
- When possible, PacIOOS will also:
- Ingest and display data into appropriate PacIOOS data viewer(s); and
- Provide links to data sets in data viewers, for data download, etc.
Ideas for Project Page Tabs
Project tabs are customizable to the needs of a particular project. Suggested ideas for tabs include the following:
- Summary;
- Geography;
- Data;
- Partners;
- Results.
